Taking Sides

All not-so-great things must come to an end. Let's just say I couldn't be more thrilled. After watching this year's Screen Actor's Guild Awards, one thing became apparent. The middle part is dead.

For the last year, the middle part has reigned supreme. I've never been a huge fan of the trend. Maybe it was because I could never split my hair evenly down the middle, or maybe it was because the end result always looked a little something like Bo Bice... anyways, I digress.

A deep side part, first made popular by actress Veronica Lake during the 1940s, has withstood the test of time. While the middle part may have stolen center stage during the 1970s, the side part became the mane attraction during the 1990s when characters like Kelly Taylor  (Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place) and Kelly Kapowski (Saved by the Bell) were the objects of style envy.

The key to keeping the side part current is adding plenty of volume at the roots and the crown, while avoiding using product on the lengths of your hair. This will keep your hair from looking stiff and over- processed like the Kelly's (sorry girls!) I recommend using Big Sexy Hair's Root Pump Spray Mousse ($17.50 Ulta) before blowdrying your hair with a round brush.

What are your thoughts on this trend? Love it? Hate it? I'd love to see you take sides...
